Recording separately. Instead of having all the musicians play together at once, multitrack recording lets you record each instrument or voice on its own track, like putting different ingredients in separate bowls before mixing them into a cake.

Born in 1955. Musicians and engineers figured out how to record different sounds onto separate areas of the same tape reel, which was a huge breakthrough that changed music forever.

Playing together later. Even though a singer might record their voice one day and a drummer records drums the next day, the multitrack system lets them play back at exactly the same time so it sounds like they performed together.

Fixing mistakes easily. If a guitarist messes up one note, they don't have to record the whole song again, just that one track, which saves tons of time in the studio.
