Cool Facts
Monster of the rivers. The Murray cod is the largest fish that lives only in freshwater in all of Australia, and it's one of the biggest freshwater fish anywhere in the world. These powerful predators can grow really large and hunt anything they can fit in their mouths.
King of the food chain. Murray cod are apex predators, which means almost nothing eats them. They're the top hunters in the Murray-Darling River system, one of Australia's most important river networks, controlling the populations of smaller fish.
Deep Australian roots. The Murray cod is woven into Australia's culture and has been for thousands of years, especially in the lives and stories of Aboriginal peoples who have lived along these rivers.
Tricky common name. Even though it's called a 'cod,' the Murray cod isn't related to the cod fish that live in northern oceans. It has lots of other nicknames too, like greenfish, goodoo, and Queensland freshwater cod.
Home is the river. These fish spend their whole lives in freshwater rivers and streams in Australia, never needing to go to the ocean like some other fish species do.
