Big brains. Neanderthals had brains as large as or even slightly larger than modern humans. They used their big brains to make tools, hunt large animals, and solve problems in harsh, cold environments.

Super strong bodies. Neanderthals were short and muscular with thick bones and powerful arms. Their stocky build helped them survive the freezing temperatures of Ice Age Europe.

Possible speech. Scientists believe Neanderthals may have been able to speak and communicate with each other. They lived together in groups and took care of injured or sick members of their families.

Tool makers. Neanderthals crafted stone tools, used fire to cook food and stay warm, and hunted big animals like woolly mammoths and cave bears. They were skilled at finding food and making shelter.

Mysterious disappearance. Neanderthals vanished from Earth about 40,000 years ago when modern humans arrived in their lands. Some may have survived longer in Gibraltar, but eventually, they all vanished from history.
