Cool Facts
Sun at the center. Copernicus figured out that the Sun sits in the middle of our solar system and that Earth orbits around it, not the other way around. This was a massive shock to everyone at the time because they thought Earth was the center of everything.
Published his big idea. He wrote a book called De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (which means "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres") that explained his Sun-centered model. It came out right before he died in 1543 and changed how people think about space forever.
Renaissance polymath. Copernicus wasn't just an astronomer, he was super smart about lots of things, like math and medicine. People who know about many different subjects are called polymaths, and that was him.
Started a revolution. His ideas sparked what scientists call the Copernican Revolution, which helped kick off the Scientific Revolution. This meant people started testing ideas with evidence instead of just believing old traditions.
Someone came first. An ancient Greek astronomer named Aristarchus of Samos actually came up with a similar Sun-centered idea about 1,800 years before Copernicus. But Copernicus probably figured it out on his own, without knowing about Aristarchus.
