Arctic adventurer. Robert Peary was an American explorer and Navy officer who spent much of his life trying to reach the North Pole in the frozen Arctic during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Multiple expeditions. Peary led several different journeys to the Arctic, learning how to survive in one of Earth's harshest environments with ice, freezing temperatures, and endless snow.

Famous claim. In April 1909, Peary announced that he had finally reached the geographic North Pole, and he became famous around the world for this supposed achievement.

Mystery remains. Modern historians and researchers now believe Peary probably did not actually reach the North Pole, and his measurements and records from that final expedition seem unreliable.
