Northern Fulmar

Ocean wanderer. Northern fulmars live in some of the coldest, roughest parts of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans, making their homes in subarctic regions where few other birds thrive.

Two color styles. These seabirds come in two main looks: light-colored birds with white heads and bodies plus grey wings (in warmer areas), and dark grey birds (in Arctic areas). You'll often see birds that blend both styles.

Not actually gulls. Though fulmars look similar to gulls, they're actually part of a different bird family called Procellariidae, which also includes petrels and shearwaters. It's a good reminder that looks can be deceiving!

Stinky defense. When threatened, northern fulmars can spit a smelly, oily liquid at attackers. This gross but effective trick helps protect them from predators who get a face full of nasty surprise.
