The Flying Man. Otto Lilienthal earned his nickname by making hundreds of successful glider flights in the 1890s. He was the first person to have well-documented proof that controlled flight was possible.

Photos Changed Everything. Newspapers and magazines shared amazing photographs of Lilienthal gliding through the air. These images convinced scientists and the public that flying machines weren't just fantasy, they could really work.

Flying From Hills. Lilienthal built an artificial hill near Berlin called Derwitzer Flugberg so he could launch his gliders into the wind. He would run down the slope and let the wind lift him into the air.

Inspiring the Wrights. The Wright brothers studied Lilienthal's work carefully before building their own airplane. His successful glider flights showed them that human flight was possible if they kept experimenting.

Building Better Wings. Lilienthal designed over 18 different types of gliders with arched wings that helped them lift. He kept improving his designs based on what he learned from each flight.
