Throws to begin. The pitcher stands on the pitcher's mound and throws the baseball toward the catcher to start every single play in the game. Their main job is to try to retire the batter, either by striking them out or getting them to hit the ball to a fielder.

The number 1. In baseball's numbering system, the pitcher always gets the number 1 because the position is so important to the team's defense. This is like being the team's key player for stopping the other side from scoring.

Many types of pitchers. Different pitchers have different jobs depending on the situation in the game. A starting pitcher begins the game, while a closer comes in at the very end to finish it off, and relief pitchers help out in the middle whenever their team needs them.

Most important defender. The pitcher is often thought of as the most crucial player on the defensive side of baseball because they control so much of what happens in every play. Their skill and strategy can make or break their team's chances of winning.
