Rocks everywhere. Planetary geologists study the same kind of rocks and soil you find on Earth, but they examine them on planets like Mars, Venus, and the Moon. By studying these distant worlds, scientists learn how planets form and change over time.
Moons matter too. Planetary geologists don't just look at planets. They also investigate moons, asteroids, and comets to understand the whole solar system. Each of these objects has its own unique geology with different mountains, craters, and valleys.
Detectives of space. Planetary geologists use rovers, satellites, and telescopes to explore worlds we can't visit in person. They analyze rocks and soil samples sent back to Earth and study images from space probes to piece together the history of our solar system.
Volcanoes and more. Just like Earth has volcanoes, earthquakes, and erosion, other planets have their own geological features. Mars has giant volcanoes, Jupiter's moon Io is the most volcanic place in our solar system, and Saturn's moon Titan has mountains and frozen landscapes.
Earth connection. Planetary geology started with the same science used to study Earth's rocks and structures. By comparing Earth's geology with other worlds, scientists understand how planets evolve and what conditions might support life.
