Rejected boring rules. Seven young artists founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 because they thought English painting had become dull and fake. They wanted to paint with bright colors, precise details, and real feelings instead.

Named after Renaissance masters. The group loved paintings from before the Renaissance master Raphael, so they called themselves "Pre-Raphaelites" to show they wanted to paint like those earlier artists. It was their way of rebelling against modern art they thought was lazy.

Nature and beauty matter. Pre-Raphaelite paintings are packed with incredible detail, from every leaf and flower to every fold of fabric. They believed beauty and truth came from observing the real world super carefully.

Poets and painters mixed. The Brotherhood wasn't just painters, artists, and poets like Dante Gabriel Rossetti all worked together and inspired each other. This meant paintings told stories and poems came alive with visual beauty.

Movement grew bigger. Although the original group was only seven members, their ideas spread to other amazing artists like William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, who created their own stunning works following Pre-Raphaelite principles.
