What puppetry is. Puppetry is a special kind of theater where a performer called a puppeteer controls a puppet, which is an object that looks like a person or animal. The puppeteer makes the puppet move and seem alive to tell a story or entertain an audience.

How puppets move. Puppeteers use their hands and arms to control puppets in different ways. They might use strings attached to the puppet's body parts, rods to move limbs, or hold the puppet directly in their hands to create realistic and magical movements.

Giving puppets voices. A puppeteer can speak in funny or different voices to make the puppet character sound alive and unique. Sometimes they do the voice themselves during the performance, and sometimes they perform along with a recorded soundtrack playing in the background.

Written puppet stories. Just like regular theater productions have scripts, puppet shows have puppet plays, which are the written stories and dialogue that guide what happens during the performance. These scripts tell the puppeteer exactly what the puppet should do and say.

Magic of movement. The most amazing part of puppetry is how the puppeteer can make audiences believe that an object without life is real and has feelings. Through careful control of strings, rods, or hands, puppeteers can make puppets smile, dance, cry, and tell incredible stories.
