One-way motion only. A ratchet uses a special wheel with angled teeth and a metal piece called a pawl that catches on the teeth. This means you can move or turn something in one direction, but it automatically stops from moving backward, like a one-way street for motion.
Pawl does the work. The pawl is the clever part that does all the stopping. As the toothed wheel tries to spin backward, the pawl wedges into the next tooth and locks it in place, kind of like putting a wedge under a rolling wheel.
Tools use them everywhere. Ratchet socket wrenches are super common in toolboxes and garages. When you turn the wrench one way, it tightens a bolt, but it won't accidentally spin backward and loosen what you just tightened.
Found in surprising places. Ratchets aren't just in tools. They keep roller coaster carts moving up the first big hill, hold seatbelts in place when you pull them, and help wind up fishing reels without the line sliding back.
Ancient and modern. People have used ratcheting ideas for hundreds of years, but today engineers use them in watches, clocks, and all kinds of machines to make sure things work in just one direction.
