Save River

Starts in the highlands. The Save River begins in the mountains of Zimbabwe, about 80 kilometers south of the capital city Harare, high up on the Zimbabwean plateau where rain is plentiful.

Creates a dramatic waterfall. As the river flows eastward, it drops over the Chivirira Falls, a spectacular plunge that marks where the water tumbles down from the highlands into a valley below.

Flows through a dry zone. After the falls, the Save River winds down the western side of Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, flowing through an area that gets very little rain because the mountains block moisture from reaching it.

Joins other rivers. The Save meets the Runde River (also called the Lundi) at the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, creating a spectacular confluence at a place called Mahenya where two rivers become one.

Reaches the ocean. The river travels through Mozambique and finally flows into the Indian Ocean, completing its 640-kilometer journey from the African highlands to the sea.
