Stealing sounds creatively. Sampling means taking a clip from an existing song, like a drum beat or a singer's voice, and putting it into a brand new song. It's like a musical collage where you mix pieces together.

Changing the sound. Once musicians sample a piece of music, they can speed it up, slow it down, repeat it over and over, or change the pitch to make it sound higher or lower. These changes make the sample fit perfectly into the new song.

Tools of the trade. Musicians use special machines called samplers or computer programs called digital audio workstations to record and edit their samples. These tools let them grab sounds and rearrange them like building blocks.

Layering it all together. Producers often take multiple samples and layer them on top of each other to create rich, complex sounds. Imagine stacking different sounds on top of each other until you have a whole musical sandwich.

Any sound works. Samples can come from anything: a drum sound, a melody, someone talking, sound effects, or even weird noises. Producers have sampled everything from nature sounds to famous speeches.
