Born from eruption. Santorini was created thousands of years ago when a volcano exploded so powerfully that it left behind a giant hole called a caldera. This crater is now filled with seawater, creating one of the most stunning natural harbors in the world.

Island group together. Santorini is actually not one island but a circle of islands formed by that ancient volcanic explosion. The main island is called Thira, and it's part of the Cyclades, a group of Greek islands scattered across the southern Aegean Sea.

Home to thousands. About 15,480 people live on Santorini today, spread across charming villages perched on cliffsides. The island is also part of a larger municipality that includes smaller neighboring islands, some of which are completely uninhabited.

Surprisingly small. Even though Santorini feels huge with all its dramatic scenery, it's actually quite tiny. The main island is only about 73 square kilometers, making it smaller than many cities, yet it's one of the most famous destinations in Greece.

Ring of islands. The caldera is surrounded by steep cliffs and ringed by several small islands, including two that still show signs of volcanic activity. This unique geography makes Santorini look like nature drew a perfect circle in the sea.
