Part of the UK. Scotland is one of four countries that make up the United Kingdom, sitting on the northern portion of the island of Great Britain alongside England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

About 5.4 million people. Scotland's population is around 5.4 million people, making it a country with plenty of space between cities and lots of wild, beautiful countryside.

Capital is Edinburgh. Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city and is famous for its historic castle perched on a hill, while Glasgow is the biggest and busiest city in the country.

Surrounded by water. Scotland is almost completely surrounded by oceans and seas, with the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, the North Sea to the east, and the Irish Sea to the southwest.

Own government system. Scotland has its own Parliament with 129 members who make decisions about how the country is run, though it's still part of the United Kingdom.
