Earth's shaky inner life. Seismology is the science that studies earthquakes and the powerful waves they send rippling through the ground. Scientists use special instruments called seismographs to detect and measure these underground vibrations from thousands of miles away.

Waves tell stories. When earthquakes happen, they create different types of waves that travel through the Earth at different speeds. By studying how these waves move and bounce off different layers inside the planet, scientists can learn what Earth's deep interior is made of.

More than just earthquakes. Seismology isn't just about earthquakes. Scientists also use it to study volcanoes, tsunamis, glaciers, and even explosions, because all of these create waves that travel through the Earth.

Detective work underground. Seismologists place sensitive instruments all around the world to detect tiny vibrations in the Earth. These instruments help them understand where earthquakes might happen and how dangerous they could be.

Understanding plate tectonics. Seismology helps scientists understand how the giant pieces of Earth's crust move and bump into each other, which causes most of the earthquakes we feel.
