Grows in shadows. Shade gardens are planted in spots that don't get much direct sunlight, like under big trees, next to tall buildings, or along fence lines. They can happen naturally or be created on purpose by gardeners.

Trickier to care for. Shade gardens are harder to grow than sunny gardens because less sunlight reaches the plants, and the soil under trees can stay too wet or too dry. The soil also has to compete with tree roots for water and nutrients.

Special plant choices. Not all plants can survive in shade, so gardeners have to choose kinds that love low-light conditions, like ferns, hostas, and shade-loving flowers. These plants have adapted to thrive where the sun barely reaches.

Found everywhere. You can spot shade gardens on the north side of houses, under leafy trees in backyards, or in wooded areas where sunlight is blocked by the forest canopy. They turn difficult dark spaces into beautiful growing areas.

Colorful without sun. Even though shade gardens get less sunlight, gardeners can still use plants with colorful leaves, pretty flowers, and interesting textures to make them look amazing and inviting.
