Shaggy Ink Cap Mushroom

Starts as a white cylinder. Young shaggy ink caps push up from the ground looking like small white tubes. Then they open up into bell-shaped caps covered with fuzzy scales, which is why people call them 'shaggy' manes or 'lawyer's wigs' because they look a bit like fancy old-fashioned hairpieces.

Gills change color quickly. The gills underneath the cap start out white, then turn pink, and finally become black. This color-changing happens naturally as the mushroom develops and releases its spores.

Dissolves into ink fast. This mushroom is incredibly unusual because after you pick it or it releases its spores, it turns black and basically melts away into a liquid in just a few hours. It's like nature's own self-destructing ink bottle.

Recycling itself completely. By dissolving into ink, the shaggy ink cap returns all its nutrients back to the soil, making it an excellent helper for the forest ecosystem.
