Ships go down. A shipwreck happens when a ship sinks to the bottom of the ocean or gets stuck on land. This can happen by accident, like during storms or crashes, or sometimes on purpose when people decide to sink a ship.

Millions exist worldwide. There are about three million shipwrecks scattered across the world's oceans and coastlines. Each one tells a story about ships, sailors, and adventures from long ago.

Ghost ships are different. If a ship is abandoned by its crew but still floats and never sinks, it's called a ghost ship. These mysterious vessels can drift for years with no one steering them.

Hidden treasures underwater. Shipwrecks are like time capsules that help scientists and archaeologists learn about the past. Exploring them teaches us about how people traveled, traded, and lived on the ocean.

Causes vary wildly. Ships wreck from storms, collisions, bad navigation, or rocky reefs. Some ships were even sunk intentionally to create artificial reefs or block harbors.
