Based on Saint Nicholas. Sinterklaas comes from a real person called Saint Nicholas who was known for being kind and helping children. Over time, stories about him became magical and legendary.
Dutch Christmas tradition. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is celebrated before Christmas and is even more important than Christmas day itself. Children leave out their shoes and sing songs to welcome him.
Brings gifts to good kids. Sinterklaas travels with helpers called Zwarte Pieten to deliver gifts and treats to children who have been good all year. He carries a big book that shows who deserves presents.
Travels by white horse. Unlike the modern Santa Claus, Sinterklaas rides across rooftops on a white horse instead of using a sleigh pulled by reindeer. Children watch the rooftops to catch a glimpse of him.
Wears red and white. Sinterklaas dresses in a long red coat and carries a golden staff called a crosier, looking wise and kind like a bishop from olden times.
