Sky Lantern

Made of paper. Sky lanterns are built with a bamboo frame covered in colored paper, making them lightweight enough to float. The opening at the bottom lets hot air escape slowly, which keeps the lantern aloft.

Powered by heat. A small fuel cell or burning material hangs inside the bottom opening and heats the air around it. This hot air is less dense than cool air, so it pushes the entire lantern upward like a tiny hot air balloon.

Ancient Chinese origin. Sky lanterns, also called Kongming lanterns, were invented in China over 2,000 years ago. They were originally used to send signals during battles or to celebrate festivals and important occasions.

Magical night display. When many sky lanterns are released together, they create a breathtaking scene of glowing lights drifting across the dark sky. People around the world now release them during celebrations to make wishes and mark special moments.

Safety concerns. Some areas have banned sky lanterns because they can catch on power lines, start fires on the ground, or confuse wildlife. It is important to check local rules before using them and to always launch them safely.
