Painted by Hand. Michelangelo created this incredible artwork using fresco, a technique where paint is applied directly onto wet plaster so it becomes part of the wall itself. Once the plaster dried, the paint was permanent.

Huge and Complex. The ceiling is over 500 square meters and shows hundreds of human figures, biblical stories, and decorative designs. Michelangelo had to plan every single figure with incredible precision.

Four Years of Work. From 1508 to 1512, Michelangelo worked on this masterpiece, often lying on his back on scaffolding high above the chapel floor. He did much of the painting himself rather than having assistants do it.

Famous Figures. The most famous scene is the Creation of Adam, showing God reaching toward Adam with their fingers almost touching. This single image has become one of the most recognizable artworks in the entire world.

Renaissance Treasure. The Sistine Chapel ceiling is considered one of the greatest achievements of the High Renaissance period, when artists were creating incredibly realistic and detailed human figures.
