Cool Facts
Smell works through tiny molecules. When something smells, it releases invisible particles that float through the air into your nose, where special cells detect them and send messages to your brain.
Smell and taste are partners. Most of what you think is taste is actually smell! When you eat pizza, your nose smells it while your mouth tastes only sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.
Your nose protects you. Your sense of smell warns you about dangers like smoke from fires, spoiled food, or gas leaks before you can see or hear them.
Animals smell way better than humans. Dogs can smell about 10,000 to 100,000 times better than people because they have millions more smell-detecting cells in their noses.
Smells send secret messages. Many animals use special smell chemicals called pheromones to communicate with each other about finding mates or marking territory.
