Freeze-dried meals. Most space food is freeze-dried, which removes water to make it super light and help it last a long time. Before eating, astronauts add water back to it to make it normal again.

Rehydration required. Astronauts squirt water into pouches of freeze-dried food to bring it back to life. This saves weight on the spacecraft compared to sending regular food.

Regular snacks too. Not all space food is special. Astronauts have brought regular items like sandwiches, fruits, and spirulina into space to eat just like on Earth.

Creative packaging. Space food comes in tubes, cans, and sealed plastic packages designed to work in weightless environments where nothing can float away or spill.

Balanced nutrition. Space food has to give astronauts the right vitamins, minerals, and calories to stay healthy while they work hard in space.
