Living water filters. Sponges are animals that pump seawater through their bodies and trap tiny food particles to eat. They can filter thousands of gallons of water each day without moving from one spot.

Super ancient creatures. Sponges are some of the oldest animals on Earth, living in the oceans for over 600 million years. They were here long before dinosaurs and are still thriving today.

Reef architects. Many sponges help build and protect coral reefs by creating homes and food sources for other ocean animals. Without sponges, reefs would be very different places.

Stuck in place. Sponges are sessile, which means they stay attached to rocks or the seafloor their whole lives. They don't swim or move around like fish do.

Weird body design. Sponges don't have brains, hearts, or stomachs like other animals. Instead, their whole body is full of tiny holes that let water flow through to catch food.
