Antler-shaped leaves. Staghorn ferns got their name because their fronds (leaves) split and branch out like a stag's horns or an elk's antlers. Some species have smooth fronds, while others have bumpy or wavy edges that make them look even more like real antlers.

Life in the trees. These ferns don't grow in dirt on the ground like most plants. Instead, they're epiphytes, which means they live on the branches and trunks of trees, using the tree for support while they collect moisture and nutrients from the air.

Found worldwide in tropics. Staghorn ferns live across the tropical and warm areas of the world, including Australia, Africa, Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and South America. They thrive in places that are warm, humid, and shady.

Many kinds exist. There are about 18 different species of staghorn ferns in the genus Platycerium, and each one looks a little different from the others. Some are rare and only found in one region, while others are common enough to keep as houseplants.

Popular with plant lovers. People love growing staghorn ferns indoors and outdoors because they're unique-looking and don't need soil. You can mount them on wooden boards or hang them from trees, and they'll stay happy with moisture and indirect light.
