Stars as guides. Sailors used the positions of bright stars to figure out where they were on Earth. By recognizing patterns of stars called constellations and measuring their angles above the horizon, they could pinpoint their location even far out at sea.

Ancient skill. Celestial navigation has been used for thousands of years. Polynesian sailors navigated across vast stretches of the Pacific Ocean using only stars, waves, and birds to find tiny islands.

Measuring angles. Navigators used instruments like the astrolabe and sextant to measure the exact angle between a star and the horizon. These measurements helped them calculate their latitude and longitude.

Moon and planets too. Stars weren't the only guides. Navigators also used the Moon, Venus, and other bright planets to help confirm their position and stay on course.

No batteries needed. Celestial navigation worked anywhere on Earth without needing electricity, satellites, or computers, making it perfect for long ocean voyages before modern technology existed.
