Shark relative. Stethacanthus was a fish related to sharks that swam in Earth's oceans hundreds of millions of years ago, living from about 365 to 299 million years ago.

Weird anvil back. This creature had an unusual flat, anvil-shaped structure on its back covered in tooth-like bumps. Scientists think it might have used this for attracting mates or fighting with other Stethacanthus.

Found worldwide. Fossils of Stethacanthus have been discovered in Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America, showing it lived in many different oceans long ago.

Ancient swimmer. With its small size, sharp teeth, and flexible body, Stethacanthus hunted smaller fish in prehistoric seas where many strange creatures lived together.
