Supergiant Stars

Incredibly Massive. Supergiants are among the biggest and heaviest stars that exist. They can be up to 1,000 times wider than our Sun and contain the mass of dozens of suns packed together.

Brilliant Brightness. These stars shine with incredible brightness, producing millions of times more light than our Sun. You can often see them from Earth even though they are incredibly far away.

Wide Range of Temperatures. Supergiant stars can be surprisingly cool or extremely hot. Some supergiants are relatively cool at around 3,400 Kelvin, while others are scorching hot at over 20,000 Kelvin.

Top of the Star Chart. Astronomers use a special diagram called the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram to organize stars, and supergiants sit right at the top of this chart because of their enormous brightness.

Short Lifespans. Because supergiants burn their fuel so quickly, they don't live nearly as long as smaller stars like our Sun. They eventually explode as supernovas at the end of their lives.
