The Nutcracker

A composer's gift. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created The Nutcracker in 1892 as a two-act ballet set on Christmas Eve. The whole story takes place in a girl's imagination around a Christmas tree.

From story to stage. The ballet is based on a short story called The Tale of a Nutcracker by Alexandre Dumas, which itself came from an even older story by E. T. A. Hoffmann from 1816. It's a retelling that traveled through different versions before becoming this famous ballet.

Choreography team. Two ballet masters, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, created the dances and movements for The Nutcracker. Petipa had worked with Tchaikovsky three years earlier on another famous ballet called The Sleeping Beauty.

Quick preview first. Before the full ballet premiered, Tchaikovsky shared a shorter 20-minute version called the Nutcracker Suite nine months earlier, and this shorter version became very popular right away.

Slow start, big success. The complete ballet wasn't an instant hit when it first appeared, but over time it became beloved around the world, especially during the Christmas season.
