Paper from the sky. Ticker-tape parades are famous for the amazing amount of shredded paper that rains down on the parade route. The paper comes from office buildings lining the streets, where people toss it out the windows to create a festive snowstorm of celebration.

Named after stock tickers. The parade got its name from ticker-tape machines that printed stock market information on long strips of paper in the early 1900s. When the first ticker-tape parades started in New York City, people actually used real ticker-tape from these machines.

Skyscrapers make it work. Ticker-tape parades need tall buildings with lots of windows so people can throw paper from high up. This is why they happen in cities like New York rather than in small towns.

Honoring heroes and champions. Cities hold ticker-tape parades to celebrate famous people like astronauts, sports champions, and important leaders. These parades show how much a community wants to say thank you and show pride.

Confetti takes over. Nowadays, most parades use colorful confetti instead of real ticker-tape because it's easier to clean up. Modern parades still create that same magical, snowy effect that makes everyone smile.
