The Tigris River

Born in mountains. The Tigris River starts in the snowy Armenian Highlands and flows downward for over 1,000 miles toward the sea.

Desert river valley. The river flows through the Syrian and Arabian Deserts, creating a ribbon of green life in the middle of dry, sandy lands.

Cradle of cities. Ancient civilizations like Babylon and Nineveh grew up along the Tigris because the river provided water for drinking, farming, and transportation.

Joins the Euphrates. The Tigris meets its sister river, the Euphrates, and together they flow into the Persian Gulf at the edge of the Arabian Peninsula.
