Festival of baptism. Timkat celebrates Epiphany, the day Christians believe Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River. People in Ethiopia and Eritrea gather to honor this important moment in their faith.

Happens every January. The festival takes place on January 19th in our calendar, which matches the 11th day of Terr in the ancient Ge'ez calendar used by Ethiopian churches.

Water plays the star role. During Timkat, priests bless water in rivers, lakes, and pools, and people splash and swim in the blessed water as a way to remember baptism and celebrate renewal.

Street parades and music. Communities come together with singing, dancing, and processions where people wear traditional clothes and follow sacred items through the streets in joyful celebration.

Church tradition runs deep. Timkat belongs to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which are ancient Christian churches with roots going back over 1,500 years.
