Cool Facts
Turkey's Official Money. The lira is what Turkish people use to pay for everything from pizza to pencils. One lira breaks down into 100 smaller pieces called kuruล, kind of like how dollars break into cents.
Used in Two Places. You can spend Turkish lira in Turkey and also in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is on the island of Cyprus. Both places recognize the lira as their official money.
Really Old System. Long ago, the very first Turkish lira had an even tinier piece of money called a para, where one kuruล equaled 40 para. That system doesn't exist anymore, but it shows how detailed they were about dividing their money up.
