A curious astronomer. Vera Rubin was an American astronomer who loved studying how galaxies spin and rotate in space. She became one of the most respected scientists of her time by asking questions nobody else was asking.
Galaxies should fly apart. Vera noticed something puzzling: galaxies were rotating too fast. By all the math scientists knew, they should spin apart like a merry-go-round moving too quickly, but they didn't, which meant something was wrong with what we understood.
Invisible stuff everywhere. Vera's work provided the first strong proof that galaxies contain huge amounts of invisible matter we now call dark matter. This mysterious substance doesn't give off light, so we can't see it directly, but it holds galaxies together with its gravity.
Other scientists confirmed it. Other astronomers using special radio telescopes that detect hydrogen gas in space proved that Vera's discovery was correct. Her work became one of the most important clues that dark matter really exists throughout the universe.
Changed astronomy forever. Vera Rubin showed that most of the universe is made of something we can't see. This discovery completely changed how scientists understand galaxies and the cosmos.
