Vietnam's Official Language. Vietnamese is the main language spoken in Vietnam and is understood by around 86 million people as their native language. It's also spoken by millions more people around the world who have Vietnamese heritage.
Part of a Language Family. Vietnamese belongs to the Austroasiatic language family, which is a group of related languages spoken in Southeast Asia and South Asia. Vietnamese speakers actually outnumber all the other languages in this family combined.
The Viet People's Language. Vietnamese is the native language of the Viet people, the main ethnic group in Vietnam. Many other ethnic groups in Vietnam also speak Vietnamese as a second language to communicate with each other.
Spoken Around the World. Vietnamese people who have moved to other countries still speak Vietnamese at home and pass it on to their children. You can find Vietnamese speakers in communities all around the world, from the United States to France to Australia.
