Volcanic Ash

Ash is tiny fragments. Volcanic ash is made of rock pieces, mineral crystals, and volcanic glass, all smaller than 2 millimeters across. That's smaller than a grain of rice!

Gases cause the blast. When a volcano erupts explosively, gases trapped in hot magma suddenly expand and escape. The force is so powerful it shatters the magma into tiny pieces that shoot up into the air.

Water makes it worse. Sometimes magma meets water underground or at the ocean floor. The water flashes into steam so fast and violently that it shatters the magma into even more ash particles.

Ash travels far. Once ash gets into the atmosphere, wind carries it thousands of kilometers away from the volcano. Ash from one eruption can spread across entire continents and circle the planet.

Ash becomes rock. As the ash particles cool and solidify in the air, they form pieces of volcanic rock and glass that eventually fall back to Earth.
