Volcano study science. Volcanology is the science where experts investigate volcanoes, the melted rock called magma that flows beneath Earth's surface, and the lava that erupts from the ground. These scientists want to understand how volcanoes work and what they tell us about our planet.

Name from ancient myth. The word volcanology comes from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking. Ancient Romans named the science after this god because volcanoes seemed so magical and powerful to them.

Multiple science fields. Volcanology isn't just one subject. Scientists use geology (studying rocks), geophysics (studying Earth's forces), and geochemistry (studying chemical reactions) to learn about volcanism, which is all the volcanic activity and processes that happen on Earth.

Predicting eruptions. One of the most important jobs of volcanologists is to monitor volcanoes and try to predict when they might erupt. This helps keep people living near volcanoes safe and sound.

Understanding Earth's layers. By studying volcanoes and what comes out of them, scientists learn about the hot melted rock and gases deep inside Earth that we cannot see or reach directly.
