Two-way radio magic. A walkie-talkie is a handheld radio that can both send and receive messages, so two people can chat back and forth without being near each other. It's like having a telephone in your pocket, but it uses radio waves instead of phone lines.

Born in wartime. Walkie-talkies were invented during World War II when soldiers needed to stay in touch on the battlefield. Several people, including engineer Alfred J. Gross and teams at Motorola, helped develop them so troops could communicate quickly without running back and forth.

From soldiers to everywhere. After the war ended, walkie-talkies didn't disappear, they spread! Police officers, firefighters, construction workers, and even hikers started using them because they were so handy for staying connected in the field.

Radio wave travel. Instead of needing cables or phone lines, walkie-talkies send your voice as invisible radio waves through the air. You press a button to talk, then release it to listen, making communication simple and instant.
