Water does the work. Washing machines fill with water and detergent, then use spinning and tumbling to loosen dirt and stains from fabric fibers. It's like giving your clothes a vigorous bath that gets them way cleaner than washing by hand.

Spinning removes water. After the wash cycle, the drum spins super fast, sometimes up to 1,200 times per minute. This centrifugal force flings water out of the clothes, so they don't drip everywhere when you take them out.

Detergent is essential. Washing machines need special soap called detergent that helps break down dirt and oil so water can rinse it away. Without detergent, water alone wouldn't clean your clothes very well.

Different cycles for different clothes. Washing machines have gentle cycles for delicate fabrics and powerful cycles for tough stains and heavy items like jeans. This keeps your clothes from getting damaged while still getting them perfectly clean.

Invention changed daily life. Before washing machines were invented, people had to scrub clothes by hand for hours every week. The washing machine freed up so much time that it completely changed how families lived and worked.
