Cool Facts
Spinning with water. Water turbines have blades or buckets that spin around when water pushes against them, kind of like a water wheel but much more powerful and efficient.
Power from height. When water falls from high up (like from a dam), it has lots of potential energy, and turbines can capture that falling motion to generate electricity for homes and cities.
Moving water works too. Turbines don't need water to fall straight down, they can also harness the energy from water flowing sideways in rivers, which is why hydroelectric power plants are built near flowing water.
Different shapes for different jobs. Some turbines have curved blades, some have buckets, and others have completely different designs, all depending on how fast or how much water is available where they're built.
Clean energy machine. Because water turbines turn falling or flowing water into electricity without burning fuel or creating pollution, they're one of the most important clean energy sources in the world.
