Gravity does the work. A zip line uses gravity to pull you down a slanted cable, so you don't need to pedal, jump, or do anything except hold on tight. The angle of the cable does all the physics for you.
Steel cable grip. Zip lines use stainless steel cables because they're super strong, don't rust, and can handle the friction of the pulley sliding along them thousands of times. The pulley spins freely so you glide smoothly without getting stuck.
From mountain to valley. You start at the top of a slope and zip down to the bottom, traveling along a cable that's strung between two points at different heights. The higher the starting point and the steeper the angle, the faster and more exciting the ride.
Cargo and people. While today zip lines are popular for adventure and fun, they were originally used to transport heavy cargo across mountains and canyons where roads didn't exist. Some places still use zip lines to move supplies over rough terrain.
Safety harness essentials. Modern zip lines attach you to the pulley with harnesses and cables so you stay safe and in control. Braking systems help you slow down at the end so you don't crash into the landing platform.
