Locked heel bindings. Alpine skis have special bindings that keep your heel firmly attached to the ski, which is different from other types of skiing where your heel can lift up freely. This locked-in design lets skiers lean into turns and go faster down the slopes.

Mountains and resorts. Alpine skiing happens on steep, snow-covered slopes, usually at ski resorts that have lifts to carry you back up the mountain. These resorts also groom the snow to make it smooth and safe for skiers.

Artificial snow help. When there isn't enough natural snow, ski resorts use snow-making machines to create artificial snow so the slopes stay skiable all winter long. This helps resorts stay open even during dry winters.

Sport and recreation. Some people ski just for fun and exercise, while others compete in alpine skiing races like slalom and giant slalom where skiers dash through gates as fast as they can. Professional alpine skiers are some of the fastest athletes in the world.
