Absolutely massive. The Atlas moth is one of the largest moths on Earth, with a wingspan that can reach up to 12 inches wide, making it bigger than many birds.

Sneaky snake trick. The tips of its wings have markings that look like snake heads, which tricks predators into thinking the moth is dangerous and leaves it alone.

Asian forest dweller. These moths live in the forests across Asia, from India to Southeast Asia, where they blend in among the trees and leaves.

Named by Linnaeus. The famous scientist Carl Linnaeus first described and named the Atlas moth in 1758, the year he was organizing all living things into groups.

Short adult life. Adult Atlas moths only live for a few weeks and don't eat anything at all, spending all their time finding mates and laying eggs.
