Built an empire. Augustus transformed Rome from a republic torn by civil war into a stable empire. He was so clever about it that he made himself the ruler while still respecting the Senate, so people felt like they had a say in government.

Created lasting peace. During Augustus's rule, the Roman world enjoyed about 200 years of peace called the Pax Romana. This gave people time to build cities, trade, and create art instead of fighting wars.

Started emperor worship. Augustus was the first to have people worship him as a god while he was still alive. This was a new idea that later Roman emperors would copy.

Real name was Octavian. He was born Gaius Octavianus (Octavian for short), but took the name Augustus, which means 'the revered one,' after he became emperor. It was a title that showed respect and power.

Won a civil war. Before becoming emperor, Augustus had to defeat his rivals in a series of battles. Once he won, he used his power wisely to unite Rome and bring order.
