Ball Lightning

Glowing Spheres. Ball lightning appears as bright, round balls of light that can be as small as a pea or as large as a car. They glow and float in the air, which makes them totally different from regular lightning that just flashes in a split-second.

Storm Connection. Ball lightning usually shows up during thunderstorms, but scientists still don't fully understand why it forms or what it really is. It's so rare that catching one on camera is incredibly difficult.

Longer Than Normal. Unlike regular lightning that disappears in a fraction of a second, ball lightning can hang around in the sky for several seconds or even minutes. This long-lasting glow is one of the biggest clues that it's something special.

Not Fully Explained. Ball lightning is still a mystery to scientists around the world because it's so rare and unpredictable. No one has successfully created ball lightning in a lab, which makes it one of nature's coolest unsolved puzzles.

Different Phenomena. Ball lightning is not the same as St. Elmo's fire, which is a bluish glow that happens on ships and mountains, or will-o'-the-wisps, which are ghostly lights in swamps. Each of these is a different type of glowing effect.
