Recent invention. Colored belts in martial arts were only invented in the 1880s, so this ranking system is less than 200 years old. Before that, students didn't wear different colored belts to show their level.
Sign of expertise. A black belt typically means you've trained hard and reached a high level of skill in your martial art. It's one of the most respected ranks a student can earn.
Comes from Asia. The black belt system started in East Asian martial arts and is most connected to martial arts like karate, judo, and taekwondo. The tradition has spread around the world.
Doesn't mean the same thing everywhere. In some martial arts, a black belt means you're truly an expert, while in others it might just mean you're competent and still have lots more to learn. Each martial art has its own rules.
