Breakdancing

Born in the Bronx. Breakdancing was created in the 1970s by African American and Puerto Rican dancers in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. It grew out of the hip-hop culture and block parties happening in the neighborhood.

Spinning and freezes. Breakdancers perform incredible moves like spins where they rotate on their head or back, and freezes where they pause in amazing positions. These acrobatic moves require strength, balance, and tons of practice.

Crew battles. Breakdancers often compete in groups called crews, facing off against other crews in dance battles. The dancers show off their skills and creativity while the music pumps and crowds cheer them on.

Beats and rhythms. Breakdancing is performed to hip-hop and funk music with heavy beats. Dancers listen carefully to the rhythm and match their body movements to the music's energy and changes.

Global phenomenon. What started on the streets of the Bronx spread around the world and became a major part of hip-hop culture. Today, breakdancing is performed and celebrated in countries across the globe.
