Cool Facts
Tower and cables. Cable-stayed bridges have tall towers with cables that go straight from the tower to the bridge deck below, forming a fan or parallel line pattern. This design is simple and elegant compared to other bridge types.
The perfect middle size. Cable-stayed bridges are best for bridges that need to span really far but not the farthest distances. They work better than cantilever bridges for long spans and cost less than suspension bridges.
Different from suspension. Suspension bridges have main cables that run between towers and anchored at the ends, with vertical cables hanging down from them. Cable-stayed bridges skip the main cable and connect straight from tower to deck instead.
Fan or parallel pattern. The cables create either a beautiful fan shape spreading out from the tower or neat parallel lines running down. This pattern helps distribute the weight of the bridge evenly across the structure.
